March 29, 2011

Hello everyone! It has been wonderful receiving all of your letters during the week!
Grandma Marion: Thanks for all of your little notes telling me what everyone is up to. I hope the Tiltons did well at their games this past weekend. Did you enjoy World of Color last Wednesday? I hope so!
Jon Thanks for the letter I really enjoyed your questions; a letter for you will be in the mail soon. 9This keyboard is doing weird things:::some elder must have been messing with it!!! i was looking for the period button on that one, but ! works just fine imo
======
I heard the terrible news that Florida beat us. One of the elders in our district is from Florida, so he has been rubbing it in my face.
My companion is having issues with her keyboard too::: this is probably the last time we will use these!!! ....even if we weren't leaving before we get a chance to use them again...
Mom asked about what we do after church on Sundays...We go back to our classrooms for a bit and then we have a fireside.
I have met most of the elders that are going to Everett. They seem nice and friendly and they have really made an effort to get to know me; which I appreciate a lot.
Our roommates, serving their missions in Thailand, left this morning: it was sad to see them go. My companion and I miss them already. Now we are the ones that have to know what is going on for the new missionaries coming in tomorrow. Speaking of which...our district has been invited to help with the hosting (showing the new missionaries to their residence halls; etc.) tomorrow; which is exciting because English speaking missionaries usually don't get asked to do it since we're here for such a short time.
We received our travel plans earlier this week...we're leaving on Tuesday morning at 5am, and then our flight leaves at 8:30. I'm the lone sister with 11 elders, but like I said, I know most of them. I might be able to call home from the airport, but it'll depend on how much time I have. I'm sure you'll get some sort of notification that I've arrived safely.
Speaking of which, can you send me the phone number of the mission office in Everett? I'd like to have it on hand in case they forget about the twelve of us...
Anyways, sorry for such a short email. the keyboard really slowed me down a bit. My next email will be from Everett! Talk to you soon!

FIRST LETTER FROM THE MTC! 3/22/11

Dear Family,
It's been great here at the MTC. I didn't have a companion for the first few days because she was coming from Australia, but she's here now! Her name is Sister Felila; she's Tongan, and is the sweetest girl you could ever meet. My roommates say I'm picking up her accent a little, but it probably won't last long since she's going to the Anaheim, CA mission.
While I was breathlessly awaiting her arrival, I was in a tri-ship with Sister Swenson, from Idaho, and Sister Donaldson, from Riverton, UT. They are going to the Baltimore, Maryland mission. fabulous, naturally, but since they were assigned to a different room, I'm very grateful to have my companinon with me now.
Sister Felilia and I have a Thai tri-ship as our roommates. They are Sister Maxwell, Sister Yinn, and Sister Tona. They are all leaving in 8 days, so they're very excited, but have also been very helpful to us sicne they've already been here for 11 weeks and know the ropes so well. Sister Tona is our Coordinating Sister ("female zone leader"), and she's been such a blessing to me. She's great at giving advice, which it seems I need every night I return from class.
Class is usually enjoyable. Our district's Elders are all wonderful. They do a very good job of making sure us sisters are taken care of. For instance, yesterday Sister Swenson was sick, and when they asked if she needed anything and she jokingly said "Pills!" they jumped right up to go fetch her some. I also mentioned one evening after dinner that I was craving chocolate and when we came together for evening classes, one of the Elders, Elder Vonk, shared some of his chocolate chip cookies he'd received from home that day. (They were so delicious, all of us sisters are trying to talk him into getting the girl that sent them to him to share the recipie with us!)
I'm glad to hear that we made it to the Sweet 16! I heard that we won our first game from one of our teachers, but I didn't know when the second game was scheduled for, so I didn't know when to ask about it! I hope we win this one!
I would describe the MTC as part chaos, part spiritually, and part reality check. I've realized my greatest weakness in teaching is knowing the actual scripture references of the scriptures that I'm quoting to my investigators.
Mom asked what I typically do, so let's see how much of that I can get out in 17 minutes..
I usually wake up around six and shower, then get ready for some personal/district/general study at 7am. Then we have breakfast as a district, followed by class time. Class might be taught by Brother Cope or Sister Stroud, or it might be set apart as Personal Study time or Companionship Study time. Or our district might get distracted, and just talk...though we are getting better at talking about spiritual things when we get off topic...as opposed to the other day when one of the Elders said he preferred Twilght over Harry Potter and he needed to be chastened...
Lunch is scheduled for us at 12:30. Then it's back to the classroom. Dinner is at 6:30...then it's back to the classroom.
Some days we have "special" activities: tonight is the devotional, and tomorrow we're having "purpose practice" where we teach other missionaries from the other classrooms on our block. One of the other classrooms has elders that are going to Everett also, so it's good to be getting to know them a bit.
Oh...and gym is thrown in there somewhere every day. The other sisters and I are getting better at using that time well...though we still dedicate a lot of our gym time to chatting and breathing exercises.
We tell ourselves it's important for our *mental* health.
Sunday was exciting...for relief society all of the sisters at the MTC meet together. This week we had Sister Stephenson of the RS general board come to speak to us about faith, and then a Sister and Elder sang a BEAUTIFUL arrangement of "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Greef." Sacrament meeting is with our zone/branch. Sister Tano played a musical number on her violin. For Sunday school, we met with our district in...the classroom!...but one of our branch presidency took over the whole time. He's kind of long winded (and by kind of, he can take 30 minutes to tell a story that can be told in 10 words...) and he wanted to tell the Elders a story about the importance of having the White Handbook on hand in case they're ever called to dedicate a grave site...
He's an interesting fellow.
Oh...before I run out of time I should mention that I can't upload photos to the email, so I'll have to develop them and send them to you the old-fashioned way. It'll be interesting to have to figure that out...hopefully it's less confusing than a pay phone ;)
But, of course, this is all stuff I know after the fact. They do a good job here of not instructing us about what we should or should not be doing...and then berating us when we do something wrong or are in the wrong place at the wrong time. They're also pretty notorious for inefficiency (no one warned me to be preapared for THAT challenge!). Like we'll have a lesson on how important planning is and then they'll eat into our planning time bearing testimony of said planning we're SUPPOSED and WANTING to be doing. I'm trying to look on the bright side though. At least they care...?
Anyways, time's almost up, and I'm on a DELL that's already crashed once while I'm on here...so better hit send before it happens again! (Knock on wood...)
Love you and miss you all!

BYU FOOTBALL

There it is, LaVell Edwards Stadium. I will miss the 2011 BYU Football season, I wish the boys good luck and look forward to returning to a fantastic 2012 Football Season!

MARCH 16, 2011 THE MTC PROVO UTAH

We had lunch at the Cougareat at the BYU Campus...we enjoyed our lunch with Allison Holdaway, Heidi, James and Libby Daniel. Mom then took many photos of us across the
street from the MTC, in front of the Provo Temple and then as I waved good-bye. I was so happy to be off and to begin my full-time missionary service. Mom and Dad were happy that I was happy.

Last Day/Night before the MTC

March 15 we attended a Temple session at the Salt Lake City Temple and enjoyed a dinner with Terri and Dex Francis. She was another one of my Young Women leaders and a good friend of my mom. In fact mom and Terri didn't stop talking the entire time we had dinner!

After dinner it was back to David and Annette's home for one last game
of Quiddler. I won!!

Saying goodbye to family in Utah

March 14 we went to visit my Grandma Donna and that night we had dinner at Tucci's Italian Restaurant in Salt Lake City with Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. I hope they will write to me too. I appreciated the mission advice given to me by my cousin Tim Hansen. It was also fun talking (via telephone) to my cousins in Kansas.

Off to Utah ...

I was set apart as a missionary on March 10, 2011 by my Stake President Charles Rich. Mom, Dad and I then loaded up the car to drive to Utah on March 12, 2011. We decided the drive to Utah would be my first preparation day. We had an early lunch with Jolie Long in Las Vegas. We stopped just outside of St. George Utah to view Kolob Canyon.

I spent the night in Provo with my old roommates and spent some time with friends. Debbie was my first "unofficial" companion. She drove me up to my Uncle David and Aunt Annette's home on March 13.

My California Family

Grandma Marion held a family farewell dinner for me at her home on March 6, 2011. I will miss my Grandma, Uncle Rod, Aunt Kelly, cousins Jake, McKayla and Karley. I hope they will write to me as I am out serving as a missionary.

More Mission Countdown Events

After attending the Las Vegas Temple I was able to visit the Redlands CA Temple and on March 11, 2011 Mom, Dad and I attended the Newport Beach Temple.

Mission Preparation Countdown #2

My farewell was held in the Chaffey Ward of the Rancho Cucamonga Stake on February 27, 2011. I was fortunate to have family be able to attend this event.

Rod, Kelly, Jake, McKayla and Karley Tilton, Grandma Marion, Annette and Hilary Holdsworth along with my brother and parents.

Mission Preparation Countdown Family Fun

I was able to visit Disneyland/CA Adventure a few times before reporting to the MTC. My mom really loves being at Disneyland, and I like it too. Grandma, Jonathan, Mom, Dad and I went one day (2/11/11) and then just Mom, Grandma and I went (3/2/11) and then Mom, Dad and I went one more time (3/5/11)!! It truly is one of the Happiest Places on Earth!

Mission Preparation Countdown #1

I received my mission call in November of 2010. Dad, Mom and I traveled to Las Vegas on January 22, 2011 to attend the 6:30 session in the Las Vegas Temple. We went to this Temple so that Jolie and James Long could attend too. Jolie is my mom's best friend and was one of my Young Women leaders.

Mission Photo Fun

I spent an afternoon with Sister Lori Larson taking a few photos of me. I am sure I won't be spending a lot of time just relaxing in a chair.

I will have plenty of opportunities to read my scriptures, probably not outside in the sun, but I will be reading the words of Prophets of old and of the life of Christ.

Scarfs will come in handy in the cold of Everett, WA.
Reading my favorite scripture.

Ready to serve!
